Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen in German) is the single most recognized formation in the Dolomites. Three massive vertical rock towers rising from a high alpine plateau, surrounded by smaller peaks and green meadows. It’s the shot that sells the Dolomites to every couple who inquires about an Italian elopement.

Getting There

By car: Drive to Rifugio Auronzo (2,320 meters) via a toll road from Misurina. The toll is approximately 30 euros per vehicle. The road is open from late May/early June through October (weather dependent).

Parking: The lot at Rifugio Auronzo is large but fills up by 9 to 10 AM in summer. For an elopement, arrive before 7 AM.

The hike: From Rifugio Auronzo, the circuit trail around Tre Cime is approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) and takes 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace. The trail is well-maintained gravel. No technical climbing required, but you’re at altitude so pace yourself.

Best Ceremony Spots

Rifugio Locatelli viewpoint: The classic Tre Cime view is from the north side, near Rifugio Locatelli (about 45 minutes to 1 hour hike from Rifugio Auronzo). The three towers fill the frame with nothing but sky behind them.

The saddle (Forcella Lavaredo): A high point between Tre Cime and the surrounding peaks. Dramatic, exposed, and windswept. Beautiful for vows.

The meadows on the north side: Rolling green grass (in summer) with Tre Cime towering behind. More sheltered than the ridgelines.

Rifugio Auronzo terrace: If hiking isn’t feasible, the terrace at Rifugio Auronzo offers views of the towers from the south side. Less iconic angle but zero hiking required.

Best Time to Visit

Sunrise. Non-negotiable for the best experience. The morning light hits the east-facing walls of Tre Cime and turns them golden and pink. The trail is empty at sunrise. By 9 AM the tour groups arrive.

Season: July through September for the most reliable weather and trail access. October for golden larches and fewer crowds (but shorter days and potential early snow).

Weather: Mountain weather is unpredictable. Check the forecast the night before and be prepared to adapt. Clouds can roll in fast, but they also create dramatic, moody conditions.

What to Expect

Temperature: At 2,300+ meters, it’s cold in the morning even in summer. Expect 35 to 50°F at dawn. Bring layers.

Wind: Exposed ridgelines are windy. This is actually beautiful for photos (flowing dress, movement) but plan your hair accordingly.

Altitude: You’re above 2,300 meters (7,500+ feet). If you’re coming from sea level, take it slow. Drink water. Give yourself a day to acclimate if possible.

Crowds: By mid-morning in summer, hundreds of hikers are on the trail. An early start is essential for a private ceremony experience.

Sample Tre Cime Elopement Morning

5:30 AM Depart your hotel in Cortina (45-minute drive to Misurina, then toll road to Rifugio Auronzo).
6:45 AM Arrive at Rifugio Auronzo. Begin hiking toward Rifugio Locatelli.
7:30 AM Arrive at the north-side viewpoint. First light on the towers.
7:45 AM Ceremony. Vows with Tre Cime behind you in golden sunrise light.
8:15 AM Portraits around the viewpoint and along the trail.
9:30 AM Hike back to Rifugio Auronzo. Coffee and breakfast at the rifugio.
10:30 AM Drive to next location (Lago di Braies, Seceda, or Passo Giau).

Combining Tre Cime with Other Locations

Tre Cime is best as a morning location. After the sunrise ceremony and portraits, you have the entire day ahead of you:

Lago di Braies: 1 hour drive. Turquoise lake, rowboats, mountain reflections.
Passo Giau: 1.5 hour drive. Wide meadows, surrounded by peaks, incredible sunset.
Seceda: 2 hour drive. Cable car to a dramatic ridgeline.
Cortina d’Ampezzo: 45-minute drive. Charming mountain town for lunch and relaxation.
