Northern California stretches from the Bay Area to the Oregon border, and it contains some of the most diverse and stunning elopement landscapes in the state. Redwood forests, volcanic peaks, wild coastlines, alpine lakes, and wine country. Here are the best NorCal elopement destinations that most couples overlook.
Mendocino Coast
The Mendocino Coast is Big Sur without the crowds. Dramatic sea cliffs, wildflower meadows, charming Victorian villages, and fewer tourists than the Central Coast.
Mendocino Headlands State Park: Dramatic bluffs and sea caves surrounding the town of Mendocino. The blowhole at high tide is spectacular.
Glass Beach (Fort Bragg): A beach covered in sea glass from decades of dumping. Unique and photogenic.
Point Cabrillo Light Station: A historic lighthouse with coastal meadows. Available for events with advance booking.
Elk (south of Mendocino): A tiny coastal village with a dramatic beach, sea stacks, and almost no tourists.
Getting there: 3 to 4 hours from San Francisco via Highway 1 (scenic, winding) or Highway 101 to 128 (faster).
Redwood National and State Parks (Humboldt County)
The tallest trees on earth live in Humboldt County. Walking through an old-growth redwood grove is a genuinely spiritual experience. The scale is staggering.
Stout Memorial Grove (Jedediah Smith): A flat, easy trail through some of the largest redwoods in the park system.
Fern Canyon (Prairie Creek): A canyon whose walls are covered entirely in ferns. Featured in Jurassic Park 2.
Lady Bird Johnson Grove: A short loop trail through old-growth redwoods with filtered light.
Avenue of the Giants: A scenic drive through a corridor of ancient redwoods.
Getting there: 5 to 6 hours from San Francisco. The drive is part of the adventure.
Permits: Check with individual parks for ceremony requirements.
Lake Tahoe
The largest alpine lake in North America, straddling the California/Nevada border. Crystal clear blue water surrounded by granite peaks.
Emerald Bay: Arguably the most beautiful viewpoint at Tahoe. The bay, Fannette Island, and surrounding mountains create a postcard scene.
Sand Harbor (Nevada side): Turquoise water, large granite boulders on the beach, and a quieter eastern shore.
Zephyr Cove: A wide sandy beach on the Nevada side. Accessible and beautiful.
Donner Lake and Truckee: A smaller, quieter lake just north of Tahoe, with the charming mountain town of Truckee nearby.
Best time: Late September and early October (fall colors, clear skies, fewer crowds). Summer is crowded.
Mount Shasta
A 14,179-foot volcanic peak in far northern California. Mount Shasta dominates the landscape from every direction. The mountain has spiritual significance to many Native American tribes and visitors often describe it as having a unique energy.
Castle Lake: A small alpine lake with Mount Shasta reflected in the water. Short drive from the town of Mount Shasta.
Panther Meadows: A sacred high-altitude meadow on the flanks of the mountain. Wildflowers in summer.
McCloud Falls: Three waterfalls along a short trail near the town of McCloud.
Getting there: 4 to 5 hours from Sacramento.
Lassen Volcanic National Park
One of the least visited national parks in California, Lassen offers volcanic landscapes, hydrothermal features, alpine lakes, and mountain meadows.
Bumpass Hell: A boardwalk trail through a hydrothermal area with boiling mud pots and fumaroles.
Manzanita Lake: A calm lake reflecting Lassen Peak. Beautiful at sunrise.
King’s Creek Falls: A waterfall hike through wildflower meadows.
Best time: July through September (the park road closes in winter due to snow).
Point Reyes National Seashore
Just 1.5 hours north of San Francisco, Point Reyes offers dramatic coastal cliffs, rolling green hills, dairy farms, and secluded beaches.
Cypress Tree Tunnel: A photographic corridor of Monterey cypress trees leading to a radio station. Popular and often crowded; go early.
Chimney Rock: A narrow peninsula with 360-degree ocean views. Whale watching spot in winter.
Tomales Point: Rolling hills, tule elk herds, and panoramic coastal views.
Drakes Beach: A sheltered white sand beach with dramatic white cliffs behind it.
Muir Woods
Ancient coast redwoods just 30 minutes from San Francisco. The Cathedral Grove is peaceful and atmospheric. Reservations required for parking.
Best for: A Bay Area couple who wants redwoods without driving to Humboldt or Big Sur. Combine with a City Hall ceremony.
