Wine country elopements offer something unique: the combination of world-class vineyards, rolling golden hills, elegant venues, and incredible food and wine. Napa Valley and Sonoma are just 1 to 2 hours north of San Francisco, making them easy to combine with a City Hall ceremony or a broader California elopement trip.
Best Elopement Locations
Napa Valley Vineyards
Dozens of vineyards offer ceremony and event packages. Some of the most popular for elopements:
Castello di Amorosa: A 121,000 square-foot medieval-style castle and winery. Dramatic and unique. Ceremony spaces range from the courtyard to the Great Hall.
Robert Mondavi Winery: Iconic Napa winery with Mission-style architecture, an archway entrance, and vineyard views.
Domaine Carneros: A French-inspired chateau overlooking rolling vineyards. Elegant, classic wine country aesthetic.
Sterling Vineyards: Perched on a hilltop with panoramic Napa Valley views. The aerial tram ride to the winery is scenic.
Sonoma Alternatives
Sonoma tends to be less crowded and less expensive than Napa, with equally beautiful scenery:
Bartholomew Estate Vineyards: Historic estate with Mediterranean-style buildings and hillside vineyards.
Viansa Sonoma: Tuscan-inspired winery with sweeping valley views.
Sonoma Plaza: The charming town square in downtown Sonoma. Historic buildings, a park, and tasting rooms.
Non-Vineyard Locations
Napa Valley hillsides: Silverado Trail and the hills above the valley floor offer stunning sunset views over rows of vines. Public pulloffs and overlooks can work for intimate ceremonies.
Bothe-Napa Valley State Park: Redwoods and coast live oaks in the heart of wine country. A permit through California State Parks is required for ceremonies.
Lake Berryessa: A large reservoir north of Napa. Dramatic water and hillside scenery, less traveled.
Wine Country Elopement Costs
Venue rental (vineyard ceremony): $1,000 to $10,000+ depending on the winery and package.
Photography (full day): $4,000 to $8,500+
Officiant: $300 to $600
Florals: $300 to $800
Hair and makeup: $300 to $600
Dinner for two at a top restaurant: $200 to $500
Lodging: $250 to $1,000+/night (wine country is expensive)
Wine tasting: $30 to $75 per person per winery
Total: $7,000 to $25,000+ depending on the venue and extras.
Best Time to Elope in Wine Country
Harvest season (September and October): The vines are full, the grapes are ripening or being harvested, and the light is golden. This is peak season and prices reflect it.
Spring (March through May): Mustard flowers bloom between the vine rows (bright yellow). Green hills. Fewer tourists.
Summer (June through August): Hot (90s+). Beautiful long evenings. Vines are full and green.
Winter (December through February): Bare vines, moody skies. Quieter, fewer crowds, lower prices. Good for intimate, off-season elopements.
Combining Napa/Sonoma with Other Locations
City Hall + Napa: Ceremony at SF City Hall in the morning, drive 1 hour to Napa for vineyard portraits and a wine country dinner.
Napa + Muir Woods: Wine country ceremony, then redwood forest portraits in Marin (1 hour drive).
Napa + Big Sur: Two-day elopement. Day 1 in wine country, Day 2 in Big Sur (3 to 4 hour drive).
