Complete San Francisco elopement guide: City Hall, Baker Beach, Lands End, Golden Gate Bridge views, best timing, costs, and how to combine SF with Big Sur, Napa, or Muir Woods.

San Francisco combines world-class architecture, iconic bridges, coastal trails, and urban energy into one of the most versatile elopement destinations in California. Whether you want a City Hall ceremony, a beach elopement with the Golden Gate Bridge behind you, or a foggy cliffside moment at Lands End, SF delivers.

Best Elopement Locations in San Francisco

San Francisco City Hall

The Beaux-Arts masterpiece with the grand staircase, domed rotunda, and marble columns. Civil ceremonies start at about $112. Private ceremonies give you exclusive access to the staircase and galleries.

Baker Beach

Wide sandy beach with a direct, unobstructed view of the Golden Gate Bridge. No permit required for small groups. Stunning at sunset. The bridge appears massive from this angle.

Tip: The north end of Baker Beach (closest to the bridge) is clothing optional. The south end is more traditional and has the best bridge views for photos.

Lands End Trail

A coastal hiking trail along the northwestern tip of the city. The Sutro Baths ruins, rocky shoreline, and distant Golden Gate views create a moody, dramatic setting.

Best spot: The labyrinth at Lands End (Eagle’s Point). A stone labyrinth on a cliff overlooking the ocean and bridge. Popular and sometimes crowded, but stunning.

Battery Spencer (Marin Headlands)

Technically across the bridge in Marin County, but it’s the most iconic Golden Gate Bridge viewpoint. The bridge from above with the city skyline behind it. 10-minute drive from SF.

Palace of Fine Arts

A Roman-inspired rotunda and colonnade in the Marina District. The architecture, reflecting pool, and manicured grounds create an elegant, almost European setting.

Crissy Field

A waterfront park with a walking path along the bay. The Golden Gate Bridge dominates the view. More casual and accessible than Baker Beach.

China Beach

A small, sheltered beach with views of the Marin Headlands and Golden Gate Bridge. Quieter and more intimate than Baker Beach. Requires walking down stairs.

The Presidio

A former military post turned national park. Cypress-lined roads, forest trails, coastal overlooks, and historic buildings. Varied and uncrowded.

Best Time for a San Francisco Elopement

September and October: The warmest months in SF (seriously). Clear skies, temperatures in the 60s and 70s, and the famous fog retreats.

Summer (June through August): Karl the Fog is in full effect. Morning fog is common but often burns off by afternoon. The fog can be beautiful for moody photos.

Spring (March through May): Unpredictable. Some days are warm and clear, others are cold and foggy.

Winter: Rain is possible but you can have stunning clear days between storms. Fewer tourists.

Time of day: Golden hour (1 to 2 hours before sunset) is magic at Baker Beach and Lands End. City Hall is best mid-morning.

San Francisco Elopement Cost

City Hall civil ceremony: ~$112 (license + ceremony fee)
City Hall private ceremony: $1,000 to $5,000
Photography (half day): $2,500 to $5,000
Photography (full day): $5,000 to $8,500+
Officiant: $300 to $600
Florals: $200 to $500
Hair and makeup: $300 to $600
Dinner for two: $100 to $400 (SF has incredible restaurants)
Lodging: $200 to $600/night

Total: $4,000 to $15,000 depending on the experience.

Combining SF with Other Destinations

San Francisco is the perfect starting point for a multi-location elopement:

SF + Big Sur: City Hall in the morning, drive 2.5 hours south to Big Sur for afternoon and sunset portraits. My most popular combo.
SF + Napa: City Hall then wine country for a vineyard dinner (1 hour drive).
SF + Muir Woods: City Hall then redwood forest portraits in Marin (30-minute drive).
SF + Point Reyes: City Hall then dramatic coastal cliffs and rolling hills (1.5-hour drive).
